Crete is the largest Greek island and with around 8261 square kilometers and 1066 kilometers of coastline, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus and Corsica, the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean.
The island has about 650,000 inhabitants. The largest city, administrative and economic center is Heraklion with around 174,000 inhabitants.
The island is an important part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece, preserving its own cultural elements. During the years 3000 BC – 1400 BC., the Minoan civilization flourished on the island, the oldest civilization in Europe, with its main centers in Knossos, Phaistos, Malia, Zakros and Gournia where palace complexes were found.
The island is extremely mountainous with three main mountain ranges, over 2456 m high.
In these mountains, there are fertile plateaus, such as the Lassithi plateau, important caves such as Dikteo and Ideo caves and imposing gorges, such as the famous 18 km long gorge of Samaria, the longest in Europe.
This geomorphology has created many beautiful and real dream beaches, picturesque sandy – the Crete Island has everything to offer.
